Climate Heroes
Made for congressional app challenge
Please briefly describe what your app does?
We designed a computer game called Climate Heroes to teach children about climate change and steps that can be taken to slow global warming. We chose to make a game because we knew games are a great way to engage children and teach important concepts. The tasks in the game, such as developing renewable energy sources, mirror tasks that can be taken in the real world, thereby providing information anda sense of agency, and instilling hope that we can meet this challenge.
In the game, students are asked to help with different tasks and are provided with educational information about those content areas. For example, students are asked to complete a puzzle to build a wind turbine and then are presented with information about wind energy as a renewable energy resource. Other tasks include solving a puzzle to build a solar panel to learn about solar energy, changing cars on the roads to bikes to learn about alternative forms of transportation, and moving floating carbon molecules to a basket to learn about carbon capture technology.
We plan to provide Climate Heroes as a resource to our school district and others to help educate students about climate change.
